Living in Sanur: a practical guide for long stays
Is Sanur a good place to stay long term? The areas, getting around, Sanur vs Canggu, and the everyday chores, from a local business on Jl. Batur Sari.

Sanur is the part of Bali people pick when they want to stay longer than a holiday. It sits on the southeast coast, a short drive from the airport and from Denpasar, with a long, flat beachfront and calm water inside the reef. It is quieter than Canggu or Seminyak, and that is the point.
We run a laundry on Jl. Batur Sari, on the residential side of Sanur, so we see the day-to-day side of the place: families, retirees, remote workers, villa owners and the staff who keep it all running. This is the practical guide we'd give a friend moving here.
Is Sanur a good place to stay?
For a long stay, usually yes, if you like a slower pace. What people tend to like:
- The beach path. A paved promenade of about 7 km runs along the coast. It was widened in a 2023 renovation and is used every morning for walking, running and cycling.
- Calm water. The reef keeps the sea flat most of the year, which suits children, paddle-boarders and swimmers who don't want surf.
- Sunrise, not sunset. Sanur faces east. On clear mornings you can see Mount Agung.
- Everything nearby. Supermarkets, clinics, gyms, schools and Denpasar's government offices are all a short ride away.
What people find less ideal: nightlife is limited, the main roads get busy at school times, and like everywhere in South Bali it is humid for half the year (more on that below).
Sanur vs Canggu
Canggu is younger, louder and built around surf, cafés and nightlife. Sanur is calmer, more family-oriented and more established, with many long-term residents. If you work from home and want quiet evenings and an easy beach, Sanur. If you want to be out every night, Canggu.
The areas, in plain terms
- The beach side (east of the bypass): hotels, villas and the main restaurant strip on Jl. Danau Tamblingan. Closest to the promenade, highest rents.
- Sanur Kauh and Sanur Kaja (west of the bypass): where many residents and Balinese families live. Quieter streets, local warungs, lower prices. This is where our shop is.
- North Sanur: around ICON Mall, the Sindhu night market and the harbour for the Nusa Penida and Gili boats.
- Renon (Denpasar): next door to Sanur, with Bajra Sandhi monument park, offices and good local food. We collect from Renon too.
Getting around
Most residents use a scooter or ride-hailing apps. Sanur also has an electric shuttle bus: it began as a trial in August 2025 and was made permanent, running between Mertasari Beach and north Sanur with stops including the Sindhu market and ICON Mall. Fares and payment can change, so check the current details before you rely on it.
Parking on the main strip is tight. Walking or cycling the promenade is often the fastest way to get from one end of Sanur to the other.
Daily life: the small things that add up
Laundry
Few long-stay rentals have a dryer, and from November to April clothes dried outside often stay damp. Most residents send laundry out. Things to look for in any Sanur laundry: per-kilo pricing with a clear minimum, an item count when they take it in, and your clothes washed separately rather than with other people's. At CLIIN that's Rp 18.500/kg washed, ironed and folded in 24 hours, Rp 15.000/kg without ironing, minimum 3 kg, and free pickup in Sanur from 5 kg.
Bedding
Duvets and bed covers don't fit home machines. Plan on sending them out every few weeks, more often in the wet season. Bed covers are priced per piece.
Villa staff and housekeeping
If you rent a villa with a housekeeper, agree early what happens to linen and towels: washed on site, or sent out. Sent-out linen comes back drier and fresher in the humid months.
Dates to know
- Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, closes the whole island for 24 hours. In 2027 it falls on Monday 8 March. Read our Nyepi 2027 guide.
- The wet season runs roughly November to April. See how to stop clothes and towels going musty.
- Island trips: fast boats to Nusa Penida, Lembongan and the Gilis leave from Sanur Harbour. Our fast boat guide.
