Rainy season in Bali: how to stop towels and clothes going musty
Why laundry smells damp in Bali from November to April, and practical steps that stop musty towels, mould spots and damp bedding.

If you've spent a wet season in Bali, you know the smell: towels that never quite dry, a shirt that smells damp straight out of the cupboard, a faint mould spot on a bag you haven't used in a month. It isn't you. It's the air.
Why it happens
Bali's wet season runs roughly from November to April. Average humidity sits around 80–85% in those months, and stays near 77–80% even in the dry season. When the air is that full of water, fabric dries slowly, and damp fabric left warm and enclosed is exactly what mildew and the bacteria behind the "musty" smell like.
The smell usually comes from three habits: drying too slowly, putting things away slightly damp, and leaving wet things in a pile.
What actually helps
At home
- Never leave wet things bunched up. A wet towel on the floor or swimwear in a bag for a few hours is often enough to start the smell.
- Dry fast, not just eventually. Sun and moving air beat shade. Indoors, a fan pointed at the drying rack helps more than you'd expect.
- Don't put away anything that's "nearly" dry. Feel the seams and waistbands, which dry last.
- Leave cupboards breathing. Don't pack wardrobes tight; air needs to move. Moisture absorbers inside the wardrobe help.
- Use less detergent, not more. Leftover detergent holds on to smells. A proper rinse matters more.
- Wash towels more often in the wet season, and don't use them for more than a couple of days.
When it already smells
- Rewash, and dry fully and quickly. A tumble dryer at proper heat is the most reliable way to get a musty towel back.
- Bedding and duvets trap moisture in the filling. They need a large machine and a long, hot dry.
- Mould spots on delicate fabrics are best treated by a professional rather than with bleach.
Why a laundry helps in the wet months
Our dryers dry everything fully, every time, regardless of the weather outside. Your laundry is washed in its own machine, dried, folded and packed, and comes back ready to put away. That's the difference most residents notice in December and January.
- Wash & fold: Rp 15.000/kg, or Rp 18.500/kg ironed, ready in 24 hours
- Bed covers, sheets and blankets: priced per piece
- Wet cleaning for delicates
- Free pickup in Sanur from 5 kg
For villas and hotels
Damp-smelling linen is the most common wet-season complaint in guest reviews. Higher par levels (more sets per bed) give each set time to dry fully between uses. See how to choose a laundry vendor.
