Nyepi 2027 in Sanur: dates, rules and how to plan

Nyepi 2027 falls on Monday 8 March 2027. From 6am that morning until 6am on Tuesday 9 March, Bali stops. No traffic, no flights, no work, and nobody on the streets or beaches. For many people it's the most memorable day of their year here. It just needs a little planning.

The dates

What the rules mean in practice

• No going out. Streets and beaches are closed to everyone. Pecalang (village security) patrol.
• The airport closes for the day. Flights don't land or leave.
• The internet is switched off for 24 hours across Bali.
• No work, no fires, no entertainment. Keep lights low and noise down at night, even inside.
• Hotels stay open for guests, who can move around inside the property.

Non-Hindu residents observe the day too, out of respect for their neighbours.

A simple plan for Sanur residents

1. Shop by Saturday. Supermarkets get busy the weekend before, and roads are blocked during the Sunday-evening parades.
2. Cash and phone credit sorted before the weekend.
3. Download films, books and maps you'll want offline.
4. Check flights if anyone is arriving or leaving that week.
5. Get laundry and bedding done the week before. Every business in Bali closes for Nyepi, us included, and the days either side are busy.

For villas, hotels and rental hosts

Guests can't check in or out on Nyepi, and nobody can collect or deliver anything. That means linen used over the long weekend can't leave the property until Tuesday at the earliest.

• Stock an extra set of linen and towels per room for the Nyepi period.
• Book your last pre-Nyepi pickup for the Friday or Saturday.
• Agree a first collection after Nyepi with your laundry in advance.
• Tell guests about Nyepi before they book: some love it, some need to plan around it.
